This article covers how to change how hyperlinks are opened from within Outlook. Microsoft is always striving to improve and streamline their product experiences by offering new ways to use Outlook and Teams with the Microsoft Edge web browser and this is why this feature has changed. However, you can quickly change it back to your default browser. In this article you will learn:

How to Change the Opening of Hyperlinks from Outlook
- Within Outlook, select File > Options > Advanced.
- Under the heading 'File and browser preferences', change the 'Open hyperlinks from Outlook in:' to Default Browser.
Note: You can also update 'Open Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files using:' to Desktop if you prefer to open them on your desktop as opposed to online. See image below:
Note: Turning this feature off in Outlook settings will affect the feature in both Outlook and Teams.
How to Change the Opening of Hyperlinks from Teams
- Within Teams, select
Settings and more (top right corner) >
Settings > Files and links > Links open preference.
- Select the desired browser from the dropdown menu.
Note: You can also update 'Open Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files using:' to Desktop if you prefer to open them on your desktop as opposed to online. See image below:
Note: Turning this feature off in Teams settings will affect the feature in both Outlook and Teams.
How to Stop Email from Auto-Opening in the Microsoft Edge Sidebar Pane
If you do use the Microsoft Edge Internet browser on occasion. In this case, you may have noticed that the email you clicked the hyperlink in also opens the email in the Microsoft Edge sidebar pane. You can turn that feature off by completing the following steps.
Go to the Microsoft Edge sidebar settings page in one of the following ways:
- Type edge://settings/sidebar into the address bar, or
- In Microsoft Edge, select Settings icon
on the bottom of the sidebar (bottom right corner).
Then from the Sidebar settings page:
- Under App and notification settings, select Outlook.
- Turn off the Automatically open Outlook email context in the side pane toggle.
If you change your mind and want your email to auto-open in the Microsoft Edge sidebar, you can turn this feature back on at any time.
