This article provides information for faculty/staff and students who would like to change either their preferred name (e.g. James to Jim) or their legal name (e.g. name change after marriage). This change will trickle into other university systems that use your name such as Canvas, or email. In this article you will learn how to:

Differentiate Between Preferred and Legal Name
- Preferred Name: The first name you go by, such as "Ben" instead of your full first name "Benjamin" or if you prefer to be addressed by your middle name
- Legal Name: Your legal name that is on file with the university. This also includes your last name. You typically would change this if you got married, or legally changed your name.
Change Preferred Name for Faculty/Staff
Preferred name changes are done in Workday. Please follow the preferred name change Job Aid located at Workday > Training > Changing Your Name Job Aid

Change Preferred Name for Students
You can change your preferred name through the Office of Registration and Records, using this form:

Change Legal Name for Faculty/Staff
Legal name changes are done in Workday. Please follow the name change Job Aid: Workday > Training > Changing Your Name Job Aid and chose your legal name, instead of your preferred name.
NOTE: Upon completion of this process, a new email address based on your new name will be created automatically. This cannot be undone. You will still receive emails at your old email address, but all future emails will be sent from your new email address. This cannot be changed.

Change Legal Name for Students
You can change your legal name through the Office of Registration and Records, using this form:
