This article outlines the steps needed to back up your Apple device to protect it from loss of data. These devices can be backed up two different ways - via iCloud or iTunes.
Backing up to iCloud (may require additional iCloud storage)

IMPORTANT NOTE: You are typically provided 5GB of storage free with the iPhone or iPad. If you deem it necessary to have more storage, you will need to involve ITS within the first 29 days of purchasing your new iPhone or iPad for a free workaround to more storage.
