2-Factor Authentication (2FA) with Duo Security requires a physical device registered to your account to complete your login process. Four types of devices may be registered:
- Mobile Phone
- Tablet
- Landline
- OTP (One-time passcode) Token, available in the ITS Help Desk
- Manage your Duo
To register additional devices please visit the 2FA Device management section.
If you are registering your Mobile Phone with the Duo Mobile app, please have your App Store ID and password available before you begin the device registration process. While the app is free, the App store may require you to enter your credentials to complete the app download.
If you are logging into a system that requires 2FA and you have not yet enrolled, you will be prompted to register a device. You must complete device registration before you are able to log in. Duo will ask you for an authentication method the next time you log in to your account; if you do not finish registering a device on initial login you will need to contact the Help Desk to assist you in accessing your account.
The steps below walk you through the device registration process.
Getting Started:
Start Setup
Google Chrome web browser is recommended for device registration.
Following the installation of the Duo Mobile app on your smartphone, navigate to Gulfline (fgcu.edu/gulfline) and sign in with SSO, then follow the prompts as illustrated below.
1. Click the "Start setup" button.
2. Choose the type of device you want to register.
Mobile Phone
Mobile phones are the recommended way of authenticating with Duo to access your account, as they offer the most options.
1. Enter your mobile phone number with no hyphens or parentheses.
2. Click the small checkbox to indicate that the number is correct; the "Continue" option is not available until the box has been checked.
3. Tell Duo what operating system your phone uses. If you do not have a smartphone, select "Other."
Click "Continue" to move to the next step.
4. You will be prompted to download the free Duo Mobile app from the appropriate app store.
Once the app is installed, open it on your mobile device. You may have to choose to allow notifications, and you may also have to allow it to access your phone's camera.
- On an Android device, this will be allowed from inside the app.
- On an iPhone, you may have to exit the app and go to Settings. Scroll down until you see the Duo app icon, tap to open the settings options, and slide the bar to "on" to allow access to the camera.
With the Duo app open, and notifications and camera set to "Allow," tap "Add Account" in the app.
Then, on the computer, you are registering from, select "I have Duo Mobile installed".
5. The next screen on your computer will be a unique QR code; hold your phone up to your computer screen with the QR code visible. The app will do all the work for you, taking a quick picture of the QR code and pairing your mobile app with your account.
Once it registers, a green checkmark will appear over the QR code.
Tablet
Tablets are another option for authenticating; they also use the Duo Mobile app.
1.Choose your tablet's operating system. Currently, only iOS and Android tablets are supported.
2. You will be prompted to download the free Duo Mobile app from the appropriate app store.
Once the app is installed, open it on your tablet. You may have to choose to allow notifications, and you may also have to allow it to access your phone's camera.
- On an Android device, this will be allowed from inside the app.
- On an iPad, you may have to exit the app and go to Settings. Scroll down until you see the Duo app icon, tap to open the settings options, and slide the bar to "on" to allow access to the camera.

4. Once registered, a green checkmark will show up over your QR code.
Landline
Landlines are the third option and convenient to have, especially if you regularly work out of a single office.
