GENERAL INTERNET FAQ
How does my internet work?
The network on campus works differently than a home network. Internet is provided to you through two sources: a wireless network and a wired network. We have supplied hundreds of commercial wireless access points throughout all living locations in South, North and West Lake Villages. However, the wireless network is a shared resource. This means that the more users who utilize a given wireless access point, the more likely users on that access point may experience slow performance and/or disconnections from the network.

Access How to Configure Your Device to Use eduroam for complete instructions.
I'm connected to eduroam, why am I here?
If you've been redirected to this website and you are connected to the eduroam wireless network then it most likely means that you didn't use the correct format for your username when connecting, which should be in the format of username@fgcu.edu. To correct this issue, return to the main Wireless@FGCU page and follow the onboarding instructions to fix this issue and restore connectivity to eduroam.
What usernames should I use with eduroam?
The University supports two types of usernames: xxx@fgcu.edu and xxx@eagle.fgcu.edu.
Why use eduroam?

What are the eduroam Wireless Network Security Features?
The wireless network at Florida Gulf Coast University uses several methods to help ensure security for connected devices. Devices connecting to this wireless network will use 802.1x based authentication for secure and easier authentication to the network. All communication across this network will also be encrypted with WPA2 wireless encryption to help ensure user data privacy. This network is also policed by an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) system that validates user device traffic for security compliance before they are allowed to connect to the wireless network.
What is WPA2?
WPA2 is a standard for encrypted communication over wireless networks. WPA2 offers higher-level encryption than previous standards like WEP or WPA and utilizes advanced AES-based encryption. This encrypts all communication between the computer and the wireless network.
What is 802.1x?
802.1x is a standard for exchanging secured authentication over a network. 802.1x prevents devices from connecting to a network until they have successfully been authenticated. Using 802.1x authentication also allows for automatic authentication by the device without requiring the user to manually login every time they connect to the wireless network.
What if the SecureW2 auto-configuration process doesn't work?
If you are unable to use the configuration process for any reason please contact the University Help Desk.
What if I'm a faculty or staff member on the main campus needing wired connectivity?
Contact the University Help Desk to assist with wired connectivity.
USING THE RESIDENCE HALL WIRELESS NETWORKS FAQ
How do I report problems?
Please contact the University Help Desk.
How do I set up my wireless printer?
We do not allow wireless printers on the housing network. Since the network is a shared connection, if wireless printers were allowed, anyone would be able to connect and print to your printer and you would quickly be out of ink and paper. For this reason, we suggest a USB printer cable to connect your printer via a hardwired connection.
Can I use my router/switch?
Routers and switches are prohibited because they can cause difficulties in accessing the network and can even cause network failure throughout the residence hall. Please use the existing wireless access points or your wired Ethernet port.
Does device X work on the Residence Hall network?
FGCU attempts to make every device work on the Residence Hall network, but not everything is supported. Devices that are not supported on the Residence Hall networks:
- Network equipment such as routers, switches, access points, range extenders, etc.
- Cell phone boosters
- Smart devices such as Google Chromecast, Alexa, Apple Home Kit, etc.
- Wireless Printers
Is there a way to improve my internet experience?
Every room in our residential housing locations has at least one Ethernet port in each bedroom that will allow your devices to access the Internet. We highly suggest that you connect any device you would like to use to the wall port to get the most enjoyable experience. The wired data ports are not susceptible to outside interference and will give you a better user experience. There are also wired data ports that are available for use in many of the SoVi common areas. Active data ports are marked with a green dot on them.
Is there a way to improve the wireless signal in my room?
Wireless is very susceptible to outside interference. To get the best possible signal, make sure you do not have any other electronic devices, such as microwaves in use. In addition, you can try disabling power save options of your device to boost the signal strength of the antenna in your device. Please contact your device’s manufacturer for additional information on how to do this.
Can I use my wireless printer on the Residence Hall network?
Wireless printers will not work on the Residence Hall network and will cause interference. Please refer to your printer operating manual to turn off the wireless connectivity.
Can I set up my own wireless router or access point?
DO NOT set up your own wireless router or access point. It will cause interference and weaken Internet performance.
Can I set up a device that doesn’t have a built-in browser (some smart TVs, gaming devices)?
For devices without a built-in browser (some smart TVs, gaming devices) visit the Gaming Registration page.
What can I do if I run into issues accessing the wireless network?
- Plug in your device! If you are using a gaming device, laptop, or desktop – plug your device into the nearest Ethernet port with an Ethernet cable.
- Wired data ports are not susceptible to outside interference like wireless networks are. Plugged-in equipment will get a dedicated connection providing more reliable access to the Internet.
